Godwits on the sandbar

Every summer around 3500 Godwits roost, at high tide, on the sandbar near the end of Tinopai Drive. The godwits feed around the harbour at low tide and, over the course of the summer, take on their beautiful brick red plumage indicating they are preparing to breed. In mid March they begin their 11,000km flight to the Arctic Tundra, with a stop over in SE Asia to rest and refuel.

The godwits give birth in Alaska and wait until their fledglings are strong enough to make the 8-day, or so, nonstop, flight back to New Zealand; returning around mid September, tired and hungry, to the sandbar in Mangawhai Bay.
